Momma say Grip Shift is de debbil
Words cannot describe just how much I loathe installing replacement cables in these things. Just dreadful.
That is all.

There are actually at least 3 different types.
The MRX 200 series - REALLY easy.
The MRX SRT-100 - the only hard part is getting the cable end out of the dang thing. A compass point works pretty well, but it's still a chore.
The SRT 400,600,800, etc. Those are tricky the first 5 or 6 times you do 'em. My first time took me 3 hours, no kidding.
I'm doing videos of them all but have only done the easy one so far. I just got some MRX SRT-100 style that I'll probably do this weekend. Then the granddaddy SRT-600s, maybe weekend after that.
Here's the MRX 202-101 easiness:

The gripshifters say that they ain't never seen the debbil, so there's no way that they are possessed by the debbil. They even read a passage from the bible proving their non-debbiliness in court. The cyclist is just making up the story of how the gripshifters haunts him!

I've never really liked the 8 spd grip shifters on my K2 for a couple of reasons. I replaced the cable for the RD a month or so ago for the first and last time. Next time around, Rapidfires.

I have replaced cables on Sram's cheaper grip shifts by tossing the whole thing
in the trash.
Then theres the German made 2 cable shifting grip.

I'm in full agreement with the OP. Too bad the yard furniture bikes I had to work on were in it for 'least possible out of pocket' repairs.

They aren't the easiest to deal with but I much prefer using them over the RapidFires. I've got Attacks and Rockets (Twisty) and would never go back to trigger levers.

Except for lacking in durability, shift precision, ease-of-maintenance, and ergonomics, they are just as good as rapidfire

I think grip shi++ers are popular because they are so damn cheap to manufacture, and so wind up on many cheap-ass bikes, and people get used to them.

I love my X.0 gripshifters exactly for the reasons you mention: durability, shift precision, ease of maintenance and ergos. I'll go out on a limb and say the same for all the gripshifters from X.0 down to X.7 The lower end gripshifters are indeed junky and I wouldn't recommend them but to make a statement that all gripshifters suck? Flawed reasoning.
OP needs to get higher end gripshifters. I've had no issues changing cables.

I vehemently disagree!

Remember, though, that there was a time before the X7 and X0 were made (back before Sram bought Sachs), and all that existed was the black Shimano or Suntour compatible Gripshifts with the bizzare double-twist cable installation that required complete disassembly, and a tiny plastic leaf spring that would float out of the shifter if you breathed on it.

SRAM started out just making grip shifters.. as an aftermarket part they were absurdly expensive.
So they Sued Shimano to get the OEM, market to let them in .
then they bought out their competitor Sachs.
They are currently closing the German locations
that make the IG hubs , and transferring that to Taiwan..
American? The Lawyers and top management
and some minions, are all that is in Chicago.

I didn't think I liked grip shift until last year when I picked up and old Myiata for a second winter bike. I find them quite effective to use when I have my monster snowmobile mitts on. I eventually got comfortable with re cabling them.
