Which BB tool(s) do I need?
Time to overhaul the BB on my 20 year old cross bike, which tools do I need? It looks like the Park HCW-4 will remove the center, but what about the 4 slot cup?

Any hook spanner will do as it doesn't have to engage more than one notch at a time. Park's HCW-5 is suitable but there are others including Hozan and Suguino versions. Many bike mechanics don't bother with the spanner but remove the lockring with a punch and hammer placing the punch into one of the notches. These lockrings are standard right-hand threaded.
If you are going to overhaul and reinstall this bottom bracket you should get the tools but if you are going to replace it with a modern cartridge type then having your LBS remove it is probably less expensive.

Another job for the crummy screwdriver.
Stick it in one of the slots and tap it around with a mallet. That's a left handed thread by the way.

OK, upon further investigation, do I get the fixed HCW-4 or the adjustable SPA-6 to remove the center part?

BTW, if the bike is really 20 years old, has been used for cyclocross or even ridden in any kind of wet or dirty conditions and this is the first time the bottom bracket has been serviced, don't be surprised if it's too badly rusted or pitted to reuse. If that's the case, replacement with a sealed cartridge unit is highly recommended and your new tools will not be useful.

And the correct tool is the Park BFH-3 combined with the OSS-1.
That's the big hammer, and old screwdriver, if you were wondering. You can work out what the rest of the acronyms stand for yourselves.
