Is a DuraAce 7800 front derailleur compatible with DuraAce Di2 7900?

I'm thinking of swapping out my aluminum 7900 front for the cooler looking carbon 7800.

Wondering why they don't make a 7900 carbon front?

The Di2 shifters and derailleurs have to work together. You can't swap in a mechanical 7900 or 7800 front derailleur.

Sorry, I was mistaken. I meant the DuraAce 7800 carbon crankset:

Will this work with my Di2 7900? Sorry for the confusion! I'm such a mechanical doofus.

It could work, but the best front shifting would almost certainly be with the proper 7900 crankset. The outer ring is hollow-forged from two pieces to give it high stiffness, so the ring doesn't flex much when your FD sends the chain into the upshift ramp.

What if the OP used the carbon 7800 crank with the existing 7900 chainrings?

The shaping of the outer 7900 ring would look pretty stupid on any other crankset. The 7800 carbon crank and stock rings should work OK with electronic shifting - many people have successfully used non-7900 cranks with the electronic setup without problems. Having everything be 7900 might give the best results, but using other stuff should still be more than acceptable.
