Handle Bars
Hi,
I have a cruiser bike and the handle bars angle back towards the seat so the rider sits upright. Because of the angle of the hand grips when I ride my wrist is bent to the side. I have a problem with one of my wrists and it tends to get sore if I use it while bent.
I am wondering if anyone could recommend a handle bar that would let me keep my wrists straight but also sit upright. I don't do a lot of long rides just errands around town.
Thanks,

There are all kinds of handlebars out there. You can get straight, slightly swept back, almost fully swept back, and fully swept back. If you do not know what you want, take your bike into the local bike shop and see what they have. I have wrist issues and just switched to the North Road / 3 speed style that have a 70 degree sweep back, so they are almost straight back. They also have a little forward reach, so I can move around a bit and that is the key to keeping your wrists from getting sore.

I Can recommend riding, or bringing what bike you have to a .. bike shop.
and try, by holding what is a variety of bars, of different bends , over the stem on the bike.
Best fit, may be changing both bars and stem,
and making the body posture less upright as well, Perhaps.

In order to not change the reach or rise while achieving a flatbar hand position (it sounds like this is a goal of yours), you would likely have to go with either a BMX bar or apehanger bar to meet your goal.
BMX bars are avalable from about 6"-10" rise and you can angle them backwards. Many have 22.2mm clamp area so you'll need a shim to shim it out to 25.4, I'm guessing this without knowing current bike specs. Ape hangers are generally 18-24" rise.
They may have a fair amount of sweep so it won't be totally flat bar position, but BMX bars get pretty close.
Here are some long apehangers on a recumbent:

I am with Feitsbob here. between the fit questions and the shifting sounds like you need in person advice from a profesional. did you buy it from a shop? used or over the counter at Wallymart?

Just found some bars that if tilted back about 30° I think would replace an average cruiser bar, put hands in about the same reach/rise but with far less sweep than an average cruiser bar:

Mmmm, me too. I'm gonna have to head to the store.
A little looking around I think those are probably Wald #870 handlebars. Only $13 @ Niagara Cycle Works.
