Shimano 28h front hubs...

Why did they quit making them?

So irritating. My favorite build for, well, myself, is 28f/32r. Granted, WI hubs are my favorite, but for a rock solid, decent weight, low cost travel and backup wheel, I can't beat Shimano hubs. Especially with those wonderful cup-and-cone bearings.

Why did they quit? I presume they didn't sell in enough numbers to make it worthwhile. Riders either want sturdy wheels (32H or 36H) or really low spoke count boutique wheels so the middle-ground got left on the shelf.

I agree that the 28/32 is just about perfect for a day to day training and even race wheel. Even Sheldon approved of this combo. I think you can still find them on eBay, though.

well they do make a 28 hole dynamo hub in a narrow 74mm wide axle,
and ship a thousand, probably, to Brompton in the UK, to build up into their bikes.

I have a WTB greaseguard 28 hole front hub _ FS,
from an aborted BOB trailer wheel upgrade project..

At the Dura-Ace level they don't seem hard to find. You can even get them through Sears. Try google.com/shopping.

Sorry, for the sake of accuracy in my venting, I should have excluded Dura-Ace. When shopping that price range, I buy WI H2/H3. I was just griping out loud about the lack of 105/Ultegra offerings.

Does seem kind of odd... I'd expect a lot of plain hubs to be sold to people who want to build 28 spoke front wheels. But an Ultegra hub is $50-60... and you can get a DT350 for that in 28°. So... Shimano's loss.

It's Shimano's loss only if DT sells a lot of them. I expect they don't

hmm, interesting. They had 28h up until HB-6600
it doesn't seem like it would be a big deal to have more than 2 lines of production for hubs.

Why would you want a low spoke count shimano front hub anyways? You can buy a cheaper and lighter novatec A291SB front hub in 20/24/28.

Another possible reason why Shimano decided to stop offering lower-priced 28 hole hubs is that lower-priced 28 hole rims are not easy to come by. Again, DT Swiss is one exception here, but most other manufacturers only offer 28 hole rims in their upper models, so it (sort of) makes sense for Shimano to only offer that drilling in their upper-end hubs.

I see more and more people buying proprietary pre-built wheelsets for their "performance" wheelset, so maybe the demand has tapered off too much for them to justify. But I agree, 28 has its uses, so it's too bad Shimano dropped the Ultegra version.
