Clipless Question SPD?

I just picked a bike with clipless pedals and I'm unsure if they take standard SPS cleats. They are Coda pedals. I do not have any cleats to tryas I do not use clipless but want to give these a try with a pair of MTB shoes.

I think coda products are cannondale's line of products for bike parts. Those look like they are compatible with SPD cleats.

Yes and no. Cannondale pedals are/were made by Wellgo, who make a wide range of "branded" clipless pedals (Ritchey, Performance, Nashbar, etc.). I've heard different reports of how compatible genuine Shimano cleats are with Wellgo pedals. Some say they work fine, some say they get stuck in the pedal. I don't know.

You can get Wellgo cleats from most shops and online. I think that's a better choice.

FWIW: SPD stands for "Shimano Pedaling Dynamics".

I have a pair of Shimano SPD pedals and they look very very close but there are very slight differences. I think I will try to find the wellgo cleats.

Some wellago pedals are designed to be compatible with shimano SPD, while others are not. That's why there are mixed reports.
The cleats are like $20, but you can just buy a new set of Shimano M520 SPD pedals for around $32 and these come with cleats that work with the pedal.

That's the problem. Wellgo lists several different cleats for it's own family of clipless pedals so you can't generalize as to what will work with Shimano pedals or even with a specific model of Wellgo's own pedals. Some work acceptably with SPDs and some don't.

For the small cost difference either buy the proper Shimano pedals or even a set of Wellgos that come with matching cleats.

I have some wellgo pedals that were supposedly shimano cleat compatible and they worked fine 95% of the time, but
once in a while the cleat would not release. I mean you had to really twist out HARD, and usually several tries.
The clip in seemed like it needed extra force as well, when compared to my shimano pedals and the tensions were about
the same. Whenever I rode them I always tried to clip out very early in case it happened. I would go with the wellgo cleats
on wellgo pedals.

That was my experience too. The cleats that came with my Nashbar-branded Wellgo pedals were advertised as SPD-compatible but really weren't quite there and I had the same erratic release problems you did when I used them with Shimano SPD pedals. Oddly, Shimano's own SPD cleats worked very reliably in the Wellgo pedals.
