9 speed Ergo Levers to 8sp drivetrain?

I've been watching the auction sites for 8 speed Ergo levers to outfit my current Campagnolo Croce 8 speed.

However ending prices at auction for Record or Chorus 8-speed Ergolevers are reaching levels ridiculously beyond reason. Sometimes ending prices extend beyond new pricing for 9 speed Centaur or even match new Chorus 10 levels.

So I've considered buying new 9 speed ergo levers and outfitting to my 8 speed Drivetrain. But descriptions of 9sp Campy levers specifically state incompatibility with older 8 speed drivetrains. In addition, I've found a couple of online Campy dealers that will downgrade 9 or 10 speed levers to 8 speed.

Will 9 or 10 speed levers work with 8 speed drivetrains without all the modifications? Are they truly incompatible and unworkable without alterations?

Campy 9 speed levers pull cable for a 4.55mm cog spacing. 8s work 5.0 cog spacing. No rocket science needed to figue this one out.

It's possible to put together an 8-speed cassette/chain combination that will work with your 9-speed shifters (As you found with your online search). I have been using an 8-speed cassette with the 9-speed Campy Record drivetrain on one of my road bikes for a few years now (I prefer to build my own cassettes and use Cycle Dynamics ti cogs and 9-speed spacers. Wheels Manufacturing makes conversion spacers too, and Torelli can custom build what you need also). The shifting performance is fine. Good luck!

If you wanted to go to the hassle you could swap the 9 index gear for an 8 index gear. The shifter is not to hard to take a part and you don't have to take it all the way apart to put the gear in.
