I need help with components

I recently wrecked my 7.3FX 2011. App two weeks ago went to LBS done a quote for ordering new shifters, upgrading. Truing the wheel. Well help told me parts weren't even ordered. So I am getting ready after a set amount of time to pick it up myself and do they work myself. I do not understand group sets or how to figure them out. Would you please help me. I am a tech where I work, perty sure I can do this, might take me a awhile to figure out how to set up shifting but I will get it.

Its about tiers , price points.. what riding participation do you have in mind?

the boxes for the major components includes somebodies tech writing, and diagrams.

Instructions on set up, in several of the worlds languages..

IIRC you were going to upgrade to 9 speed from 8, since you broke the shifter.
You'll need-
9 speed cassette with your choice of gearing.
9 speed chain
Shifter or integrated brake/shifter.

Is you shifter separate from the brake lever or combined?

Thanks for the great reply!
My shifters/brakes are combined. Where I have problems is that Trek 7.3 FX uses a mixed group. So I was having a hard time tring to figure out which I need. I feel if I need to buy I might as well upgrade for a few bucks more. If you would point me to the right group set I would be thankful.
