    Early wrenching success

    For my birthday, I wanted a apex groupset put on my bike. When I was quoted prices between $750-$800 installed, I decided it was time to learn to do the work myself. I recieved some tools and parts instead, and this morning successfully took off the old RD, removed the chain, and switched out a cassettee for the first time. I know what your thinking, but I am not that good at fixing stuff, so wish me luck when the rest comes in. I am not changing out the crank, need a little practice before I mess with a BB and crank.

    Best of luck. As I've said a million times, none of us were born knowing bike mechanics, so we all have to start someplace and grow our skills over time.

    The best advice I can give you is to know your limitations, and not be unwilling to ask for help when you need it. Over time the line between what you know and what you don't will move in your favor.

    Your local library may have a few bicycle mechanics books available to check out. Can come in handy when wrenching.

    Good luck MrDelPrete. Hope it all rides great in the end. BTW, the BB was never that bad. Once I had the right tools in hand, it was easy. The headsets were/still are a pain for me, at least the old threaded ones are. Hopefully, you're installing a threadless unit. But I still have days when I need to take a deep breath. If it ain't a manufacturer who gets the amount of threading off, or a frame maker who didn't machine and square off the faces on the head tube, or some guy spec'ing the cheapest of headsets, or someone who's crashed his frame and had some shop try to re-align the head tube but ovalized it in the process... etc. Well, life gets interesting and I find myself mumbling profanity at the ghosts of previous wrenches that have touched the bike. But then, a bike build without that cursing wouldn't be as satisfying...maybe. LOL!
    Yes, I can roll my own potsticker skins!

    Best of luck! Just take your time, use good quality tools, read up on repairs and think through the next steps before atarting. I think you will do fine.
