Quick question for the bike mechanic guru's...I have an FSA triple crank with standard square taper BB. Can you convert this system with screw in external bering BB to get a lighter stiffer crankset?

FSA crank, you almost certainly have standard English threading. In that case yes you should be able to convert to a external bearing crankset. Of course you actually need a new crankset, which should come with the correct BB.

Is this a road or MTB? Do you want to keep the triple or go to a double?

FastJake is correct! You can almost definitely get a new crank and BB assembly that will be a direct replacement for your square taper crank and BB.

However, the actual advantage of this is pretty much negligible and gives no real advantage that you can notice in terms of speed or efficiency. If you are replacing the crank for some other reason, like swapping to a double or because the exisisting one is damaged then it makes sense, but not as an 'upgrade,' so called.

Thanks guys. As always I know I can come here for answers. And yes it is a road bike and a triple. I have a lot of hills on my fav roads and I think I would want to stick with a triple for climbing. I asked as a friend is upgradding to a new bike with BB30 and was going to make me a killer deal on his Ultegra crankset, which is supposed to be lighter than my FSA Vero.

Sounds like a good upgrade. Ultegra external bearing > FSA square taper. Lighter and stiffer for sure.
