Newbie 's Question

Though my wife and I ride a tandem I have my "vintage" 1980 Schwinn Super Le Tour that I enjoy riding. I have toyed around with a new road bike and may go there in the future but for now...
Anyway here is my question. It presently has a 39/52 chain ring and a 19/29 cog/cassette.
What would it take to get me some climbing gears on this bike?
Thanks!

You can go from either end. A crank with smaller chainrings, either a triple or a compact. Or larger cogs in the back. For specific info you will need to tell us cassette or freewheel, number of shifter speeds and index or friction.

Shelbyfv,
It is a cassette with 6 speeds and I have friction shifters. I just changed over to barend shifters from the down tube.

A triple crank will give you a small ring of 30 or smaller. If you don't want a triple, a compact double will give you a small ring of 34t. You can get a Shimano Sora or Tiagra triple and bottom bracket for under $100. Or you could check ebay for older models that might look better on your bike. Also check Velo-Orange.
