noob hub question

looking to buy a used freewheel hub. is there a difference between track hubs and hubs that can take a 5spd freewheel? if so, how can i tell by eyeballing it if it will take 5spds?

thanks!

yes there's a difference. The biggest difference is in spacing. Freewheel hubs are offset to one side, to have space on the right side for the freewheel. Track hubs, made for a single sprocket are usually symmetrical and don't have room on the right side for the freewheel's width.

Ditto. The flanges on a "real" track hub are about 10mm farther apart than a 5 or 6-speed freewheel hub.

Post #5 give you the numbers you need to determine if a certain hub modified or with modification will work.

The drive side spacer that originally made that a 5-speed / 6-speed hub is missing...

Get a bunch of spacers - 2mm, 5mm, 8mm, 10mm, 12.5mm, 14mm and 16mm...swap 'em in and out until you get what I provided in the chart in the other thread I linked to.
