Derailleur won't align with 7th gear.

I just bought a new Shimano Tourney TX35 Rear Derailleur (6/7 Speed) rear derailleur, and after installing it I realized it would not shift into the largest of my rear gears, the 7th gear. I made sure that the hanger was not bent ( the top and bottom chain align with the derailleur gears), and I then manually extended the derailleur and realized that at its max extension it only aligns with the 6th gear. Is there something I'm missing here? did I accidentally purchase a 6 speed derailleur even though it says 6/7 speed? thanks for your help!!!

you need to adjust the (L) screw on the derailer . back it off 1/8 of a turn at a time until the pulley line up with the biggest gear.
