bent chainring... ugg peddle stuck... hack saw fix

A buddy called me over because his wife hit bike with the car in the garage and bent the chainring.
I told him to start hitting the peddle to crankarm with pb blaster and id bring parts.
I grab a spare 1-piece crank w/ chainring and headed over.
Got there after 30min ride and we tried to remove the peddle and broke the wrench. Sprayed it every 15min for two hours and tried again and broke another wrench (and yes we were turning it the right way) he got mad at losing tools and grabbed a hacksaw and cut the arm.

While this worked because having another crankset is there a better way that might not have been so destructive? If there was time I wanted to take it down the road and try some heat with a torch.

What kind of wrench? were you using a real pedal wrench or a adjustable? Somehting like the Park PW-3 may have worked but that crank looks pretty rusty. maybe a bit heat too

Did the hacksaw come into play before or after the PBR Talls were passed out?

Good wrenches are pretty hard to break so I wonder about the quality of the tools you used. Also, impact will often loosen parts steady torque will not so using a mallet on the end of a good quality wrench will often loosen threads effectively.

The flats on that look wide enough that a conventional open end wrench may have fit.
That's a better choice than a pedal wrench, if it fits.

The flats were wide enough for open end wrenches. One was craftsman and the other was matco.
He broke the first pulling hard and the other tapping with a hammer. The back had a allen socket
slot he tried that too and twisted the allen wrench.

I'm thinking heat or maybe longer pb blasting may have worked. I just wish we could have gotten it without a hacksaw

you can also straighten 'rings with a "Model T" wrench, among others, whilst on the bike, there are several tools made for purpose as well. I've straightened dozens very often without charge.
