upgrade from 7 to 8/9/10 speed freehub body

I've got an old 600 hubbed wheelset with a hyperglide freehub body. I'd like to replace the 7 speed hub body with an 8/9/10 speed unit. I know the pre-97 dura-ace hubs used a special tool and special hub bodies but is anything else shimano pretty much compatible?

I think they are otherwise compatible and just use an allen.

yes everything else shimano makes is compatible other than dura-ace. other that replace the freehub to the number of cogs you want you'll need to redish the wheel so it be center in the frame .And match the shifter to the number of gears.

I also think they're compatible. I have the pre-97 Dura Ace 7 speed hubs, read lots of info on them on Sheldon's site which explained everything to me, and got my hubs switched over to 8-9-10 speed. It seems to me anything other than the old Dura Ace is pretty interchangable and easy.

Hyperglide->Hyperglide should be easy. To the best of my knowledge, most Shimano hubs have used the same freehub body<->hub shell interface since Uniglide in the mid-'80s.

Your best bet is to buy a Sora or Tiagra hub (cheap on eBay), which is cheaper than a new freehub body in most cases. Removing the freehub body from the new hub might be difficult (hint: put the old cassette on the new hub without the lockring and use it to hold the freehub body in place whiel you unscrew the fixing bolt).

Attach the new freehub body to the new hub with the new fixing bolt. Figure out some combination of old and new axle, cone, dustcap, and locknuts that fits (depending on the design of the old hub, it's likely that the new axle with one of the old cones and the old dustcap will work best). Take everything apart, repack the bearings all around, and you are now the proud owner of an 8/9/10s wheel!

You can also use 8 cogs of a 9 speed cassette on your 7 speed freehub. Works fine with 9 speed shifters.

I just did a Uniglide->Hyperglide swap using a Tiagra donor hub, and am looking forward to having a few extra cogs this spring.

7 [126] to 8 [130] needs a dropout spread .. lots more than just a freehub
hub parts swap.

Silly me.

Is the frame (OP's) steel or aluminum? In my experience, 126->130 is small enough that it doesn't cause steel frames much anguish. The wheel needs to be re-dished, though.

Also a non-issue on alu bikes IME.

Yeah, I just buy the bodies new on eBay for about $5. Some vendor puts up a bunch of stuff all at once and has them.
