It also turns out my chain has a bit of rust as well. I just cleaned and scraped off the rust from the cogs and cleaned the chain. THe rust is still there, if i put some oil lube on there will it be okay?

Rust makes a fine abrasive, especially in the very thin layer such as you describe. Mixed with oil
it will hang around doing its mischief. This is of import mostly inside the rollers. Best advice is to
ride around a bit with a lightly lubed chain and then clean the chain vigorously with one of the
brush type cleaners with several rinses to reduce the rust particle load. Will this help? In theory
yes, but the mileage difference in chain life will be small. If you plan to winter ride much you
will get a lot worse stuff on the chain with salts, fine grit and road trash peculiar to a New England
winter. Saw a bunch of cars coming down I65 tonite with all sorts of muck and mud all over,
refugees from the storm further north today. So by the end of the winter it won't matter much.
If you are going to put the bike up, and are sure no salt is on the chain just lube it good, if obsessive
clean and lube. Do I do this? no but I only have problems with summer rain causing rust once or twice a year! I just lube and ride, 800 miles south of you. Steve

I think im just going to run this cassette/chain to the ground, cleaning it constantly until the season is over so i can get a new chain/cassette. Since thers a little bit of rust at every pivot on the chain im giving up on scraping it off.

I had a rusty chain a while back after some wet weather. I cleaned it up really well and lubed it. Let my next ride clean it up for me-nice and shiny. Probably not that good for the overall life of the drivetrain, but it's working for now.
