Shimano Alfine chain tensioner

Need information on using an Alfine to swing a 50/34 front chain rings with a single speed hub and vertical dropouts? Will this work?

No. Like all spring arm tensioners the Alpine is designed to tension a chain after it was been made as short as possible, not to take up chain wrap like a derailleur. The device you will need is a Paul Melvin. The Melvin has a 20T chain wrap so it will handle the 16T warp your setup will require. Of course you could also use a derailleur (modified for SS or not) , but what fun would that be.

Or you can just use an old derailleur and save $90.

Yes, if You use correct tensioner.
Alfine CT-S500 max front tooth difference is 16t.

Alfine CT-S510 is for single front chainwheels only.

The ct-s500 is the one I have, I was building a bike that hadn't been ridden in years. I have been riding single speed bike's off road for the past 7-8 years and thought something with 2 speeds would be nice to ride to the trailhead than switching to the lower trail gears. All the parts are from my "spare parts bin"

I have never seen the 500; all I ever saw was the the 510. So, yes since the 500 has a 16T max wrap capacity it would work for your setup. Sorry for the confusion..

The wheels are 700c w/ x32 tires. the rings are sort of a halfstep plus granny 48/42/28

The frame is from european market and was marketed as a cyclocross bike.
