Preventive Maintenance

Hi fellas,

I am a big believer in preventive regular maintenance. I am kinda stymied about what kind of preventative maintenance one can/should do on Shimano Ultegra 10-Speed brifters.

I have a 1994 mountain bike with Shimano LX shifters that I occasionally shoot light oil (LPS1) into, and everything has been hunky dory.

My question is this; Should I occasionally shoot some light oil into my Ultegra brifters?

Thanks for all responses.

Bikes: '96 Litespeed Catalyst, '05 Litespeed Firenze, '06 Litespeed Tuscany, '20 Surly Midnight Special, All are 3x10. It is hilly around here!

The general procedure with Shimano (and Campy) brifters is "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." As long as they are working properly leave them alone. Save the flush and lube process until they start giving you problems.

+1. No oil or anything. My only caveat is that at least the rear cable should be changed every 3000 miles. Otherwise it's prone to snapping, IME. YMMV.

Hmm, interesting observation. I changed the shift cables at 8100 miles on my most recent overhaul and the cables I replaced were still working fine with no problems and no broken strands.

Thanks guys. I won't mess with with the brifters then.

I just change my shifter cables yearly, and the brake cables once every two years or so.
