hint, make sure to get one for a triple. also make sure hte mount type is right...some mount to a braze-on frame mounting, others use a "ring" looking clamp to mount to the frame.

I think there is one other measurement...I'm somewhat a newb when it comes to bike mechanics.

Just a triple front derailleur, and you'll probably have to measure the diameter of the tube unless it's a braze-on (the type that kind of bolt to the seat tube).

Also, you have to make sure you get one that matches the # of gears you have in the rear cassette.

It's he could have just looked at pictures of bikes and used a photo editor / paint program to generate that pic. Don't BBQ him yet after all he is a newbie and it is Christmas. Give him a day or two let's see where he goes with this.

What??? No chainring bolts?

Must be some serious technology behind that crank.

heh, they bolt from behind.

The cranks on my old Trek 1100 were just like that...it was an 80s thing.

What you need to measure\know is the diameter of the collar\ seat-tube size.

If you don't have calipers, go to your LBS.

If you don't know what it is, it seems unlikely that even if you buy the correct der for your bike that you'll be able to align and adjust it properly. If you're going to try to do it yourself, either buy a book on maintenance or go to the Park Tool site and follow the instructions exactly.

Bluddy fantastic. The answer to the original question was (da daaaaa): Take it to your local bike shop.

It HAS to be the answer as soon as ANYONE says: What's this part called?

If you had answered that question for this person with those very words:

1) We wouldn't have wasted time trying to find out what he was talking about.
2) We wouldn't have found out how clueless he was on bikes
3) We wouldn't have offered advice on triples, seat tube diameter and somesuch because now the dude is even more confused.
4) We wouldn't be cringing as the guy says he's going to get one himself (LOL!!!)
5) We wouldn't have heard the usual line from clueless people: "...to the shop though they are expensive".

Listen pal, take heed of my answer above. Go to the LBS now. Don't look back. Don't argue. Whatever they charge will be an investment... it will work!
