Stem Replacement Comparison
I have a custom built steel bike with a classic look, built up by a respected member of this forum. Recently I noticed a crack in the Thomson stem, which is right at the headset and goes all the through the top right half of the head of the stem over the headset. There is also a slight crack at the screws at the handlebars. It resembles being overtightened, but I find that unlikely. I haven't torqued it in any way since it was built. Setting that aside, if I replace a 36 mm stack height Thomson with 10 degrees with a Ritchey 42 mm stack height with 6 degrees, is that relatively similar? I have a custom cut spacer on the headtube (instead of 2 4-mm, it's a nice single 8 mm polished spacer), so I don't want to have to put "regular" spacers in there.
Also, I did a little google searching and it seems there have been some Thomson x2 failures. Has anyone experienced that. And before you ask, 5'6, 115 so it ain't me.
I don't see where there are other polish stems that would fit the bill. I don't want black, and I don't want it loaded up with logos.
