PMK- It would be informative if you were to install your bbs correctly, per Shimano's instructions, then report back. It is my understanding of this thread that those who have done so have not had problems.

How many people need to express their misgivings about these parts before it becomes a legitimate concern by your criteria? Problem Solvers is making money by providing a solution for an issue you feel does not exist. Are they all wrong?
I have always tempered my remarks to keep within the considered boundaries of this forum. I learned that I made the installation error by reading this string. That is the value of the forum. We share information.
That information should have come from Shimano. It did not. Neither their instructions nor their customer service were helpful.
All I wish is that Shimano had responded in a way that gave technical support. I blame them for not doing that.

PMK, did you verify that your BB shells are no longer than 68mm and 73mm?

I'm not siding with Shimano, per se. Product information should clearly describe the right way to use a product, but the manufacturer is NOT obligated to imagine all the wrong ways a customer can use a product so that they can warn them off. It is unfortunate that their customer service wasn't more helpful. What is the Problem Solvers part you're referring to? I didn't see it mentioned earlier in the thread.
My point is...there are traditional procedures, time honored work arounds and well known tricks of the craft that help us get our bikes right. When a product is engineered such that these procedures must be rethought, then yes, the manufacturer should call it out and have their customer service folks provide that info.

It is aluminum and made to replace the plastic cup on a 54 but will replace the aluminum cup on the 55 also, I presume. It has no lip so it can be threaded in deeper and work with spacers. They are almost as expensive as the bottom bracket, though.

These Stronglight bottom brackets are cheaper and look like they have no lip on the non-drive side cup (looking at the pics anyway...).

Anyone know if it'll work with lower-model Shimano BBs?
Installed a new BB with the SKS Chainboard a few months ago on my wife's bike and she's recently reported a creaking sound/feeling. Wondering if the lipped-NDS cup isn't fully-supporting the BB body.

They fit Shimano BB-UN 26 and 54, presumably 55. I've used a 54 cap on a 55 (temporary fix) so I guess the Problem solver part will fit. I've also used a Tange LL-3922 cap on a 55 and it fits.

Tange has a very helpful chart of the dimensions of their LN-3922 BB. It takes some of the quesswork out of choosing one.

Just a follow up post. The Shimano BB lasted about 1000 miles. It started clicking. I took it out and could feel a "notch". Fitted a Tange now, fingers crossed.

Part of the comprehension problem here is the measurement:
The OP says .010 thousandths - I think he meant .010" (10 thousandths of an inch).
The next guy says 10 mils. Mils is machinist slang for thousandths of an inch, so he's still right.
The next guy wraps several layers of foil tape, likely more than 10 thousandths of an inch, but whatever works.
The next poster refers to 1/100000 inch. Actually, .010" is 1/100 inch. 1/100000 would be .00001", which would, indeed, not be a big deal.
The last guy is referring to one millimeter of clearance. A millimeter is equal to .040" (40 thousandths). A pretty sloppy fit.

I installed mine according to the instructions(purchased in July) and can tighten it according to the specs but within 5 miles it gets the click. I have checked my pedals, the BB cups, even made sure the FD wasn't hitting the chain or rings. It does make me wonder if I should have bought the Tange.

Upping a relatively old thread but I had the issue of bottom bracket clicking too. I replaced my xt cup and cone bottom bracket with a UN-55. 22km in I hear a click, click mostly at the bottom of the non drive side rotation of the crank. It got progressively worse until you could hear me coming down the street. I did grease the threads of the cartridge bb so hopefully that wasn't the issue with it working loose.
I really cranked them on tonight and the clicking went away in my short test. I hope it has solved it for now, otherwise I will go back to my cup and cone bb.
