New Front Suspension Fork - K2 ZED 3.0

Hello there guys. Noob here.

I'm thinking of replacing my front suspension fork on a 2008 K2 3.0, but I don't know what my options are.

The current frame is a RockShox Dart 2 front suspension fork / 100mm of travel. That is all the information I was able to find.

I have no idea what fork I can use or what measurements I would need to find the an appropriate fork. I wouldn't like to spend more than $200, but I don't want to replace my bike.

I use it around town as a spare bike. I sometimes use it to go to work (8 miles round trip) and occasionally I let my friends borrow it so they can come to me to the xc trail.

I hope I can get some suggestions from this forum. I've been visiting pages and it looks like greek to me.

I would also help to know if is relativley simple to replace the fork once a new one is purchased. I'm mechanically inclined, so I think it would be able to do it, but I don't know what tools I might need. It might be cheaper to take it my LBS.

Thanks.

The bike is very similar to this one.

Hi Fusero -

It doesn't sound like you, personally, use the bike for trail riding. What are you looking for in an upgrade?

With a $200 budget, you won't get much of an improvement with a new fork. At that price, I would check the classifieds here at Bikeforums, Mtbr.com classifieds, or Ebay for used forks. You'll need to look for a 100mm suspension fork with a 1 1/8" threadless steer tube and disc brake mount. You'll also need to verify the length of steer tube you will need, if you go the used route - you can get a ball park measurement by placing a ruler on top of the fork crown and measuring to the top of the steer tube/stem.

Since you're letting friends borrow it, I'd recommend a fork with air preload(or dual air). This way it is much easier to change the spring setting for different weight riders.
