front derailleur compatability

Will a 9 or 10 speed front derailleur work on a 6 or 7 speed bike?Braze on by the way.

FD just shove the chain sideways, but they will be narrower because the chain is.

go down market, or older parts, where the 8 speed stuff is the norm.
