screw size for under-BB plastic cable guide?

I bought a fixer-upper Burley tandem, and have everything I need except the screw to mount an inexplicably missing cable guide.

Do they tend to be a standard size/threading/length?

Thanks.

Good question. I got a used Cannondale Six-13 frame with a big hole, and not sure what is supposed to be used. I may just glue the damn thing on. Or use nothing, or maybe double sided tape. I wonder if cable tension will keep it in place.

The screw is a sort of standard but I do not recall what it is. The ones I have seen are usually something like a self tapping M5 or there abouts.

The cable guides came in several style but basically mounted in one of two ways a scres directly into the BB shell and type that had a nub that went into a bigger hole and then a screw expanded the nub like a hollow wall fastner.

Bike tools etc says they are 5mm. https://www.biketoolsetc.com/index.cg...tem_id=US-0073

if the hole is already tapped just try a short 5m screw, same a s bottle cage or rack screw

Thanks, BG-- hope I have a short one around. Obviously a longer one is a bad idea!! Usually I have a trashpile junk frame around to pull stuff from, but the scrappers are lightning quick these days.

hmmm... maybe some washers will help get one to the right length.

M5 and M6 are both common sizes on bikes; probably 90% or higher chance one or the other of those would work. Other wise, a little adhesive will also do, as cable tension will hold the piece in place.

If the BB is not installed you can always put a screw in and then cut or grind it down. if your using a standard 'cup and spindle' bb you can use a bit longer screw than a fat cartridge.

Just for fun, here's the bike. I'll try to get it finished up tonight. The only other things it needs at this point are the fd and a rear brake. Thanks again.

Under which BB are you speaking of?

The rear BB is a snap ring oversized sealed bearing..

I had a temp gig at the Co Op in the 90's,
the frames were made by the guy that now makes Bike Fridays.

I just checked my Burly and it has a old standard Shimano guide ) with the metal insert (SP18-M; which didn't come with a screw) and a 5mm screw with 8mm's of thread. BTW, the newer Shimano BB guides (SP18-T) come with a plastic insert and sheet metal screw (I bought a frame one time that had this guide and the seller had tried to use the screw which of course did not thread and it stuck out 2 mm ). As far as the front BB guide, mine has a small plate with three holes brazed across the bottom bracket, that guides the cables under the tube connecting the bottom brackets.

Most I've seen used a very short 5mm screw, but a few were riveted.

Rear BB. The bike came w/ a Bag-O-Parts, which included a new cable guide. I was assuming it was the correct one, but who knows. Thanks for the Burley specifics.
