Can I put a 10 speed road cassette on my MTB which currently has a 2x10 drivetrain. I know that 10 speed MTB drivetrains use HG-X chains which are specific to MTB, but what will happen if road cassette is used? Will shifting be severely affected? Another option I guess is to use both road cassette and chain. But then - how about front shifting?
I must note that I will be occasionally switching back to MTB cassette (about 5 times a season).

New Same cassette brand, and same cog number , 10,
and a new chain are most likely going to be fine.
you should leave the worn chain, bagged together, with the cassette you remove, anyhow.

a new cassette and a used chain are never a good idea.

Forgot to mention that I'm using Shimano parts. But anyway, I'll probably buy a new road cassette and a chain for the purpose. I'm not doing much front shifting while training on road so I guess a set of road chain and cassette is my best bet.

Shimano 10 speed MTB vs Road chains have similar dimensions but different directional chamfering.

KMC 10 speed is compatible for MTB & Road (Shimano, Sram, etc) and non-directional. However, if you are switching cassettes, keeping chain with cassette is best.
