    Can I run new Campy 11 speed on 10 speed chainrings?

    So I'm thinking of changing over a well worn shimano 9 speed DA drivetrain to Campy and seriously looking at the current silver 11 speed Athena group. Currently my crankset is a Ritchey Logic with 50-34 TA Syrius chainrings. These are rated 9/10 speed.

    Do I need to replace my crankset or at least the chainrings to run 11 speed Campy? FSA makes compact 11 speed rings but I'd rather not have to make that additional investment.

    I'd calculate the ratios you really use , and question
    whether you have such abundant funds for the huge inflationary
    uptick in chains and cassettes that will wear out and cost at $100+ and $200+ a pop..

    But, as chains still are 1/2" pitch ..but, the rollers get thinner,
    and so the chain ring teeth get thinner to match..

    so the 10 speed width will let the 11 speed chain slide over the teeth,
    if tight , wear the chainring tooth faces and stretch the inner plates on the pins a bit

    The issue isn't the chainrings themselves, but the separation or the gap between them. Chainrings for 10 and 11s are closer together so the narrower chain cannot fall between them and jam. Your crankset may or may not be OK, but it's easy enough for you to check for yourself.

    Shift the FB to an in between position and manually lift the chain so it's resting on the top of the inner chainring and resting against the face of the outer. If there's no way it can fall between them it's a pass. However if it can stay up there resting between the tip of the inner and face of the outer it fails and you'll need to pony up some more dough.

    You have to test no other way to know. A lot of guys using 11 with after market cranksets. Probably it will work but you have to test it yourself.

    The difference is so small, can't imagine there would be a problem. I have an old bike set up with Campy 10 speed, but running a "5 speed" crank from 1985 and it's fine.
    Going the other way, wider chain on a narrower crank might not be good.

    You can run a 5 speed chianring with a 10 speed chain w/o any problems as long as it clears the teeth all ok, a 5 speed frewheel is diferent because probably a 10 speed chain will get stuck between the cogs. My personal experience is that you can use a 10 speed chain all the way from 10 up to 8 speed w/o issues and mixing chainrings as well.

    Yes - I have been runnning a Shimano 10 speed set up using 10 speed chainrings on an old 9 speed Dura Ace octalink crankset (bottom bracket seems to go on forever) and have just changed to a campag athena setup on the same 10sp chainrings, which seems to work fine, even using a Shimano Ultegra 10 speed front mech with the campy shifters. There is no problem with the front shifting, although did require the limiters to be adjusted (campy obviously pulls a bit more cable than shimano 10 speed). Only problem has been skipping on the back in middle gears but that's my fault for buying a second hand cassette and putting a new chain on it. Bottom line is give it a try before splashing out on new crankset...unless you really want that new crankset.

    What works on Shimano or Campy chainrings will not necessarily work on your TA chainrings. The TA rings that I have and others that I've seen are much thicker at the teeth points. I had to file the backsides of my wife's 9-speed TA rings to get her 9-speed D-A chain to drop over the tips of the teeth. I think the spacing between the rings is also wider due to the thickness of the TA rings.
    If I were you I'd stick with the D-A 9-speed drivetrain as long as possible. I ride all 10-speed record on one bike and all 9-speed D-A on another and the only advantage I can see to the Campy is the smaller shifters and other lighter components. In my opinion switching to Campy would not be worth the problems of dealing with an incompatible rear wheel or crankset.

    I you're having trouble with your D-A shifters shoot them full of WD40. I've restored mine twice with nothing more than WD40.

    Just buy the whole groupo from Ribble or Shiney Bikes, where they are cheap and avoid the problem altogether.

    The 11 speed teeth are .1mm thinner than 10 speed. The actual tooth spacing, between the rings, is usually not the problem, it's the lack of ramp material on the old big ring that's the problem. The tooth spacing on 11 speed is 7.7mm. You can find old 7 chainrings with the same spacing.
