9speed shifter 8speed cassette

Looking replace my down tube shifters which are friction only with something that has both. Checking the bay there are a few 8speed friction/index (sis) that pop up, but more 9speed options (DA-7700) . I like the gearing on the Shimano 8sp cassette so would prefer to keep it, I've poked around on the forums and get a lot of conflicting comments -- can anyone confirm the success with indexing 9sp shifters with 8sp cassettes? Perhaps using the alternate cable routing Sheldon recommends here?

notes: dual chain ring so not an issue, rear derailleur DeoreLX m581

Thanks.

I wouldn't risk it, mixing 8 & 9 speed.

I have Sunrace 8 speed downtube shifters and they work very well. Index only, though.

Not what you asked, but you can get new Shimano 8 speed downtube shifters for $29 from Ribble. 8 speed bar ends are $63.

Thanks shelbyfv, haven't been to Ribble before, but Shimano r400's are index only. Looking for both.

I tried Sheldon's method with a 9 speed ultegra shifter and 8 speed cassette and couldn't get it to shift properly. Some combinations might work better than others.

Get rid of the indexed lever, and you are good to go.
friction adapts with every shift.

6,7,8 all have the same indexing spacing anything nore 9 or 10 need to use indexing specific for those speeds.
The only way you might get away using it with other than it was made for is in friction mode. 8 levers in friction mode may work on 9 if it has the extra movement to travel the distance for the last cog some do some don't same from 9 - 10 friction only.
The only other way to get indexing with a mix it using something from problem solvers, but if that’s the case just buy a 9 speed cassette for the 9 speed levers and forget about it if your wheel will take one.

This is a piece of piss. It's the first combination listed for the ShiftMate model #2.

I have a feeling running a ShiftMate will also result in crisper shifting thanks to a shorter and less curved rear housing.
