Ultegra 6600 right shifter cable end stuck in shifter; can it be fixed ?

Pulling in the driveway last night, downshifted, and the cable broke at the cable end inside the shifter. Now the shifter is jammed, as I can only shift 3 "clicks" and then it binds. Can't see the cable end inside the mechanism, but I assume it's jammed in there somewhere. I futzed around with it a bit then called it a night. A brief internet search this morning produced a couple examples of the same issue. In both cases, the conclusion was that it couldn't be fixed. Anyone out there have any experience with this problem ? Should I be shopping for a new shifter ? Thanks in advance for any replies.

Here is the thread that discusses drilling an extraction hole to get at the cable end. https://www.bikeforums.net/showthread...ighlight=cable

I had the same problem, but was able to get the cable out without drilling. I used a small hex key to push in the hole where the cable was broken in side the shifter. A few pokes and operating the shifter up and down, and the end came up to where it could be pushed out.

Cable heads can be removed, but it can be a royal pain in the donkey. Every mechanic has his own personal trick, so I suggest you bring it to a dealer and let someone who can do it for you. Anyone who tells you that a lever is toast because of a cable head, is only someone who doesn't know how to do a job that others can. (of course there might be the exceptional lever with a badly corroded cable head stuck in place, but I haven't run into it yet)

Yea, be sure to ask the mechanic if he knows how to extract it before you let him at it.

Hello again. Thanks for the suggestions. Knowing what to look for, tweezers, and a little patience got the bugger out of the shifter in about 10 minutes that night. New cable installed and good to go. Cheers !

This is what I did to remove broken cable. Note bike must have been in easiest gear as no part of the cable was visible or pullable.
1. WD40 the shifter internals - just to make sure everything will move OK.

2. Get a metalwork/welding scriber tool and use it to apply force on the cable barrel in the same direction you feed the cable.
Basically you are putting on pressure the same is if it were under derailleur load.
3. You'll now be able to click the smaller shifter and it will ratchet the broken cable back one gear.
4. Apply force again on the cable barrel and shift gear again.
Do as many times as is necessary to get to the hardest gear, ie the position you need to be in to remove/install cables.
5. Remove broken cable with long nose pliers.
