Legs just too strong!
Legs just too strong!
My buddy has an 8 speed sora 0CR3 mostly b/c it was the bike he could afford. It has triple (52/39/30) chain rings with 12-25 in the back. He wants to get higher gears and a tighter progression in shifts. He is on a limited budget. Thanks for the help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
1) What would be the cheap and best way to get hi gear and tight progression?
a. Is there an 8 speed 11-21?
b. Just get a 53 and/or 42 chain ring? Ok with sora?
c. Go 9 speed? Downtube/barend shifters?

a. look at www.sheldonbrown.com he got charts for available cassettes.
b. stick with the 52, one tooth in front is no big deal, one tooth in the rear is more, especially in the smaller cogs. For example,
52 - 12 gives you a ratio of 4,3333:1.
53 - 12 gives you a ratio of 4,4166:1.
52 - 11 gives you a ratio of 4,7272:1.
c. stick with the 8 speed.

what about a 42 up front and there is no 11t 8 speed on S.brown like a 11-21...just some meg range that he does not need b/c of his 30 up front....

8 and 9 speed cogs are interchangeable.....though 10 speed is not becasue they are thinner 1.6 compared to 1.8 for 8/9 speed.

Customized cassettes are the way to go. I've been doing it for years. Sram PG-970 (11-23 is one spec) is a 9 of appropriate range and its only 45 from nashbar. I would get that and if there are any other spec cogs he wants, snatch off the old one. I like having a few sets to play from and replace individual cogs as desired or as they wear.
