Single speed to geared bike chain conversion
Hello all,
I am going to be putting the gears back on my wifes old Miyata (attempting to at least)
I have been reading the park tool blue book and it looks like there are different sizes for the number of gears? is this correct? Also is this the only thing i will have to worry about when buying a chain size, (are all sizes compatible with all brands, or will i need to find one that is Miyata specific?)
Thank you for your input, all is greatly appreciated.

If the reat axle spacing is 120mm, it may be a candidate for an internally-geared hub,
which she might like more
which she might like more
since you did not offer the axle width on that Miyata measure the rear dropout spacing
and get back with that data.

Read the links in post #2.
Internally-geared hub as recommended in posts #3 and #4 could be a nice solution, although it sounds like you are putting the bike back together (like Humpty) from its original parts?
If the rear wheel will have between 5 and 8 gears, you can use an "8-speed" chain.

Is it a true single speed frame? (no shifter bosses, no cable stops for shifters, no cable routing over/under BB shell, no RD hanger, track fork ends on the rear)
If it is, then the only reasonable thing to do is IGH and/or cranks with gears like hammerschmidt) - and probably you are into 120mm spacing as well, and fussing with cheap RD's that mount on the axle is no fun, full length shifter cable housing is not recommended, or improvise clamps for the stops.. not worth the effort.
If it's a road frame converted to SSP at some point, a normal gear system is more appropriate to do.
