LBS Dinged My Frame :-(

They could not explain how it happened...but are taking steps to put it right...apparently a new frame is on order and they will swap over all my components.

Kinda bummed...bike is less than 6 months old.

You are one lucky guy. At least the LBS is making it right at no expense to you. No excuses or telling you it must have been that way when you brought it in.

Yes...I was concerned that's what they'd state...it was refreshing to see their response.

Once all it taken care of I will return to this thread and post the shop name as a kudos...

There is no paint damage at the compression and no other area of the bike shows a problem (as would be expected if it had fallen off the wall hook they put it on). To me it looked like a work clamp had been applied to the top tube, but they assured my they only clamp to the seat post during work (I had the bottom bracket re-packed).

Any thoughts on what happened?

Wow, that's a heck of a ding!

Looks like it could be a stand clamp crush to me. At least they are making it right.

It is an Alu frame, so kinda vulnerable to crushing along the tubes. The section there is kinda like a bloated triangle, not circular and only the top side is affected. Section still seems stiff and bike is rideable...but obviously overall section strength is now compromised...as is resale value.

That's why I do all my own work. When it gets screwed up, I know whom to blame and who's going to set it right.

So just to update...the frame was delayed and then the wrong size was sent...had to be re-ordered etc...a few months more to wait...finally got it and the shop had all the components swapped over within 1.5 days.
Bike has been excellent since.
No charge for the swap out.

...except if the OP had done that to his bike, like the shop did, while doing his own work, he'd now be out a frame and a complete rebuild...

Good shop.

Stuff happens.

Reminds of the mid '80s when I, as an auto mechanic, dented the trunk lid of newer alloy bodied Porsche while pressing it down to shut it (can't remember the exact model, but it was super exotic).

I told the owner about what I did and he said "no problem, I've done that myself." He then walked over to the trunk, opened it up, banged the dent out with his palm, and let the trunk lid drop shut.

I kid you not.

That owner saved my job that day...

Back in 88 I was super sick, barely could see straight, and working at the bike shop. Racer comes in that we sponsored and I absentmindedly clamped his seat tube in the stand. Crimped it real good. Bridgestone rep was a friend and replaced it at no charge. Thank goodness! Stuff happens.

From the looks of it they dropped something fairly substantial on the top tube. They make it right and all is good.

Yeah - looks like something dropped on it. Lightweight also means more fragile as more and more weight is being removed from 'non-essential' areas. That goes for aluminum, carbon fiber and lightweight steel too. Have already seen two CF top tubes cracked just because the riders apparently fell on them. Not a mark on the paint and the frames were warrantied but still ...

Nice to hear your LBS looked after you - I'd stick with a shop like that.

How'd they deal with the few months delay - did they give you a loaner bike so you could ride? Very glad to hear the favorable outcome.

Those are the same sized "dings" that people describe in craiglist ads for cars and motorcycles.

I wouldn't hesitate to ride that while waiting on the replacement.

Yes...the bike proved ride-able for the intervening months. Was able to put my usual 40 miles per week on it with my commute. No noticeable changei n the shape of the ding, no noticeable ride feel changes. New frame working the same except that the IGH & belt drive seemed to be shifting smoother than ever ;-)
