Shimano Nexus 3 cable is suddenly too short

Fellows, I didn't expect that one. I had the stem changed for a longer one to get a more comfortable, upright stance on my bike. However, the speed cable is now a bit strained, just enough I can't downshift in first gear with my Nexus 3.

The cable comes out of the "bell" at the rear wheel and runs along the bottom tube of the frame. At the front, it passes to the left of the fork and then right to the shifter. Passing the cable to the right of the fork would certainly do it, but I have no idea how to get this done. Removing the leather cover on the handle to slide the shifter off and reposition it could work nut the cable's lenght seems too short for that. Then there's the other end of the cable, at the wheel. After looking at technical manuals I also balk at doing this...

Any suggestions? Thanks!

I think removing the bell crank, change the cable's position and put back the bell crank would be the easiest way, but I can't figure out how to do that.

Well, you're going to have to learn how to remove and replace the bell crank anyway if you're ever going to fix a flat, so ya may as well learn now. It's quite simple. Select 1st gear (that's the default position for that hub) and then loosen the screw on the back of the bell crank. I think it takes a 10mm wrench, The bell crank will slide right off. Be careful not to lose the shift rod. Re-install in reverse. Ensure the alignment indicator lines up between the two marks in the window in 2nd, and you're good to go.
