Source For FSA Nipples
I was trying to true my FSA wheel and one of the spokes busted. I threw it away not knowing how difficult it would be to find another nipple. Does any one know where the heck to find a new nipple?

Now you know why many mechanics don't like wheels with unique spokes or nipples. When a customer comes in with an expensive "component" wheel and it's way out of true from a broken spoke and we say it will be two weeks to repair they will blame the mechanic and not their purchasing decision. I wish that wheels with propriety spokes would include a few replacements with the new wheel.
But, of course, that would teach the consumer that the wheels might need them/spokes might break. Which can and often will happen. It's funny how the truth can harm a products image. Andy. |

mechBgon, they are hex, not spline drive.
mrrabbit, you know that it is impossible to get nipples from FSA, and that is obviously why you hold on to the few that you have like gold. Andy, I hope you feel better after your rant. I didn't go out and choose to purchase an FSA wheelset and I also didn't take it in and blame a mechanic for being lazy or corrupt, rather it came on my used TT bike, and if possible, would like to find a few nipples so that I don't have to trash an otherwise decent wheel. I do agree that after this experience I will be very careful when selecting wheels to purchase. To continue on ranting I have an old Schwinn that I would like to replace the BB, but I can't get the old Suntour BB out because it needs a special tool to remove the internally splined cups. |
Spoke thread rolling dies are making a pretty standard pitch..
you might consider getting a bag of 100 normal square faced Nips and replacing all of them. As to the BB drag the bike to a bike shop they can remove the BB, then you can buy the tools for the one you will continue using, instead of the one you are taking out. |
I could possibly try replacing the nipples with normal nipples, but I would have to drill out out the wheel and the spokes would be too long, so I would need new spokes and new nipples. Still might be worth it since it is useless right now.

Sounds like it might be easier to just buy a cheap new wheel at this point.

Corynardin- That you next wheel set will reflect your recent experience is good to hear. After 38 years doing this LBS job I've learned my rants don't change much. I wasn't speaking solely to you with my reply. I've always thought the audience is greater then the person in front of me.
IIRC the SunTour Bb cup tools are plate stampings. I have some of them on my peg board. If you were in Rottenchester I'd be glad to see if they work on your BB. The old Park SPA- yellow might also work, if the cup is not frozen in the shell. The extreem is to get the die grinder out and start at the axle's end... hope you have a lot of beer... Andy.

Is it possible CNspoke could be of help?
http://www.cnspoke.com/products/Nipple/nipple_func.htm If it is one of those, I may be doing an emergency order in November to correct one error in my shipment that arrived last week - I can always piggy back small stuff in my corrections. =8-) |
