Work Stand

What kind of work stand is recommended? I did a search but the search on this site sucks.

Interesting ploy, the old "your site sucks but give me a hand" approach.

There's a bike tool company called Park and they have a number of stands at different price points. Harbor Freight sells bike stands. I made one myself using a design I found after searching "diy bike stand" on a well-know internet search engine.

I didn't say the site did. I really like the site but every time I do a search I come up with pages of posts that are not at all relevant.

There are a number of stand designs, ie. clamping tubes, BB and fork, portable, etc. Then there are various features, qualities and prices. Lots of choices, and it isn't a question of better or worse, but suited to your preferences, estimated frequency of use, and budget.

Without wanting to be facetious, or insulting, I might posit that if you aren't experienced enough to know what you want in a stand, you probably don't need one at all, at least not yet. A stand isn't a necessity for working on bikes. You can make a pair of hooks to hold handlebar and saddle, use rope to hang them from a pipe or the ceiling and use that. Professional mechanics in Europe did this for a century and many still prefer it over stands.

Take your time and look around, and make a short list, then check reviews to estimate quality and value of those models.

Thanks for the links and they worked fine. Don't know why the other one didn't. I have used hooks in the past, as FBinNY mentioned. When I was a teenager I just turned my bike up on the handlebars and seat. I just saw the mechanic at the LBS using a work stand and really liked it.

I sometimes forget about the search and think I am post something new that has not been discussed only to found out that it has. I thought for sure that I was posting a new question in Folding Bikes on using a folding bike on Amtrak trains. If had only remembered the search I would have found my answer right away. In fact it is hard to come up with anything about bikes that has not been discussed somewhere on the forums. The exception may be in the Fifty Plus (50+) forum. In the 50+ they are allowed a lot of leeway to talk about things that are not about bicycling. But who wants to hear about my knee problem (don’t have one, that’s just an example)?

However, when you reach my age, you ought to be able to ramble on a little about nothing. It is one of the privileges of being old. Two neat things about being old are grandkids and cheap coffee at McDonalds (69 cents for us old people).

I have a stand but sometimes I still use the turn up on the handlebar and seat method. I think it’s called the, too lazy to dig out the stand syndrome.

This is the one I have. I got it for $50 on sale. Works well. Everything I have put on it fits. Its definitely nicer to work standing up than kneeling or sitting on a stool.

I have to stand by Bob that board search engines dont always give the information looked for. Dont be too mean to him, he at least tried first, unlike many.

When you search this forum, use google instead:

In the google search box

bike work stand site:www.bikeforums.net

On the issue of stands, I only buy them used, and have seen the one bike pro stand used for the price of a PCS-10. I eventually worked my way up to a PRS-2 (2 bike stand), used of course. Awesome stand, should have taken a picture of it when I had my 50 pound tandem on there, mounted vertically. Very stable, very secure, not portable.

Just moved to belgium and the LBS closest to me uses a self designed system that uses old homemade hooks...one set that hooks under the seat and another set that hooks the handlebars...the hooks are attached to recycled chains that are strung from the ceiling of the workshop area. Amazingly simple, highly effective, and quick to install or remove bike from it.
