Shimano 600 hoods

Hi

I have some old Shimano 600 tricolour brifters that I picked up really cheaply as they were sticking. I have freed them up (was pretty easy) but one of them has a buggered hood. It seems that hoods for these are very rare, so my question is: has anyone had any success with Hudz? Their website is scarce on details but maybe someone has found that a particular model can be modified to fit the older style brifters?

Cheers

James

But what's the actual difference in fit? Is the shifter wider, longer, taller? I don't have a 10 speed STI to compare to, but they don't look that much different.

The shapes don't need to be very different for the hood to fit extremely poorly because they are heavily molded. If you can borrow a hood from a friend's 10-speed shifter then you could see if they are at all close before dropping money on the Hudz. Also, have you checked your LBS's to see if any of them have some old ones 600 hoods hiding in the back of a box somewhere? I would try as hard as possible to get the right hoods before going with something that doesn't fit well.

Best bet is to try to find some NOS ones... the 7/8spd (don't forget RSX) brifters are a completely different design to 9spd, let alone 10spd.

I'd say it's worth the effort though - 1st gen STIs, although ugly, are probably the pick of the bunch. Shimano's crappy grease aside, with proper lube, I can see them going for decades.

Pretty sure the same hoods will fit RSX to Dura-Ace.

Yeah they're really nice which is why I'd like to get them on a bike. Will just have to keep looking around!

Could you just wrap the lever body in handlebar tape as a stopgap solution? It wouldn't be symmetrical, so you might have to remove the other lever hood and do both.
