Will this cassette fit?

The old freewheel and steel rim on my SR400 Cannondale got replaced with a Mavic Ksyrium Equipe wheel and a Shimano 12-25 9-speed cassette. I would like change the cassette to the Shimano HG50 11-34 9-speed. The Loose Screws website says this cassette "requires the use of a Shimano 8 or 9 speed compact hub which is designed to accept a cassette with an 11T first position cog." The splined hub on the wheel is 36 mm wide. Other than that I know nothing about splined hubs and how they might differ. Will the 11-34 cassette fit in place just like the 12-25 does?

Any 9-speed era freehub will accept an 11T cog so that's not a problem. You may require an 11T size lockring but all Shimano cassettes come with an included lockring. What may not work is your rear derailleur as most road rear derailleurs won't clear a cog larger than 27 or 28T.

BTW, when did Cannondale EVER sell bikes with steel rims?

Unless you have found yourself spinning out the 12 tooth why not just get a 12-34?

Hillrider, Thanks for the tip: my road derailler would never climb such big gears. Live and learn. Also, I checked those old wheels and they are an alloy.

cny-bikeman, I just didn't see a 12-34, but it's a moot point. Back to the drawing board.
