Need an upper cone for a Shimano loose ball headset

Need an upper cone for a Shimano loose ball headset
Hi guys, hoping one of you can help me out here.
My sweet 90s ride is nearing perfection (just started on a modern bike, but it's at square one; the only keepers are the rear wheel, front hub and seatpost), but I've hit a bit of a snag with the headset.
I'm pretty keen on eschewing cartridge bearings on this bike (although thanks to stripped BB threads I've had to use em in the BB); I much prefer loose balls. But even though I volunteer at a co-op, I'm not having any luck sourcing a replacement for the brinelled upper cone in my 600 headset... I've gotta say, it seems a bit strange for the rest of the headset to be fine while the upper cone has copped it; every other damaged headset I've seen has done it hardest on the lower race.
So, I guess it's kinda likely that someone has a similar headset sitting around with a trashed lower race...
Anyone? Or should I have posted this in C&V?
