Skips on one cog...Grrr

My Giant OCR2 started skipping on the "E" cog about a month ago. I have an SRAM PG-950 cassette (12-26T). I've tried moving the barrel adjuster, but I'm skiddish about moving it too far for fear of screwing up the other alignments. I've gotten to the point where I just try not to use that gear. It seems to be the worst when I use the middle crank (I have a triple), but it skips on the wide one, too.

I have Tiagra shifters and 105 RD/Tiagra FD now, but I have new all new Ultegra components that I'm going to install when I get a free weekend. Will that solve the problem, or should I buy a new cassette, too? The cassette is about 7 months old and has not been driven hard.

Sounds like a bent or chipped "E" ring on the cassette.

Yeah, i've had that problem before and it turned out one of the teeth in the cog was half chipped. Have a really close look at it, and see if one of the teeth looks different to the others. Cheeers

It might help to run the barrel adjuster back in and then try snuging the cables slack by loosening that Allen bolt on pulling the extra slack through (not to Tight) on the deRAILHER. The tension you're adjusting with the barrel adjusters is NOT going to throw it out of allignment per se, that is an issue with the limit screws, but this may all be moot if it is just a chipped tooth or worn down drive train. I might make the suggestion that if you are not familiar with all of these adjustments you get some help from a shop or a knowledgeble buddy when installing a new group of components. Especially the limit screws in the f-d, I've seen instalations that have totally neglected the importance of limit screws and they f-d when shifted into the smallest ring on the triple allows the chain to drop, scrape up the Bottom bracket shell and frame, also the tension screw if it is incorrect could result in the f-d slaming into the side of the frame chipping the hell out of it. Just some stuff to keep in mind. Good luck

-- Maybe it is that the chain is too worn.
