Forte SPD clipping out on hard accel.
These are my first clip-less pedals. They only have about 2.5k miles on them, and earlier this week I started having serious issues with clipping out on the left side when accelerating. I have taken two hard hits to my Achilles so far. I have tightened the tension and there is no change. I, and others have inspected them and see nothing other than ordinary wear. Could the spring be softening?
They were not very expensive, so replacement may be an option. Or I could treat myself to Speedplay Zeros, and a pair of road shoes that really fit (currently use MTB shoes/pedals on road bike for commuting). Any thoughts?

If you want to keep the shoes you have, I would highly suggest a pair of Crank Brothers Candy pedals. My wife has them on her Madone, and loves them. If you want road shoes, this would be your excuse to make the switch, in which case I love my Speedplay pedals. I have X2 on my Cannondale, and they are fantastic. I have a genetic hip defect which makes my left ankle hang out to the left when I ride. Anything with any type of return tension puts strain on my knees.

Since it's just the left pedal, most likely one of two things are happening - your pedal stroke isn't smooth and your left foot twists/moves around too much or the pedal mechanism is catching. Have someone ride behind and look at your pedal movement for the first. For the other, spray something like WD-40 all over the pedal and try and get inside the pedal. Move it around as much as you can and see if you can work it loose so you can tighten it.
SPDs are a good choice for commuting, especially if you walk around much. If you don't, try a LBS and look at various pedals. Speedplays are okay but you might want to also consider other brands like Look, Shimano road (SPD-SL), etc.

If you think it is the pedals and have had them under a year, Performance should be gracious about replacing them. Especially if you bought it at one of their stores. I recently brought back a rack trunk that was having a problem with a zipper. Turned out it was just a little over a year since I had bought it, but they still took the bad one back and gave me a new one off the shelf.

You Know!? For Kids!
I would look at worn cleats. Also, are you using Forte cleats or Shimano cleats. I recall reading about some issues there, even though Forte is supposed to be SPD compatible.

Had the Time Atac come loose on downstrokes..
the front spring bar is the one that moves, to unclip.
it moved then too..

Thanks for all the comments. Wife wound up getting me Speedplay Zero Chomoly's for my birthday. I had to spring for the road shoes.

Speedplay Frogs don't get a lot of publicity these days but they are great road pedals too. Light weight, durable cleats, plenty of float, very secure and their cleats can be used on either road shoes or recessed cleat MTB or Touring shoes.

There are two kinds of SPD cleats, single release and multiple release. You want the single release type. See the second page of the following Shimano instruction sheet:

Jack of all trades
If you were using Shimano multi-release cleats it would be understandable. I use them and realize that the risks of un-clipping are out weighed by the ease of unclipping in a pinch. I have had trouble with the MR cleats unclipping unintentionally, but, cured it quickly by simply tightening the spring tension, which worked just fine. I suppose worn cleats could be the issue, but, that seems unlikely.

enjoy those speedplays, make sure you use locktite on the bolts and dont over torque them. I use these and they're pretty cool.
