Changing from BB5's to BB7's.

Hello all.

I would like to change from my BB5 disc brakes to BB7's. I dislike my BB5s because everytime I take the tire off I have to realign everything and it sucks but with BB7's each pad can be aligned (at least that is how I understand it).

I do not know much about sic brakes but do I need to change out the rotor (I think that is what it is called) too? Or can I use the one I have?

You should be able to keep the same rotor, and just change the caliper.

You don't mention the model years of the BB5's you have, or the BB7's you are looking to replace them with, but current 2013 versions both have G2 CleanSweep rotors

Why do you have to realign everything every time you take the wheel off? That shouldn't happen...

IDK if User-operator is not getting the wheel in right, Mechanical disc calipers ,
don't do things on their own.
it is not really alignment, just a horizontal motion
at a right angle to the disc.
whole caliper alignment is thru the Mounting bolts.
Loosen, and then hold the brake on, while you retighten them..

The inside fixed pad adjustment is the same..
the 5 the cable adjuster on the caliper is the pad wear adjustment,
the 7 eliminates the cable adjuster, replacing the pad wear with that knob..
If you are using Drop bars there may be No cable adjuster anywhere else.

the pad spares are also different .. FWIW.. 7 uses the same pads as the Juicy line.
Juicy, hydraulics in general , touch the lever when the disc is out
and the auto pad wear mech moves in and wont come back out.
without going thru a procedure.. a PIA..

So, don't forget to stuff a Keeper in, when you remove the wheel..

Sadly, I am not sure on both accounts. It came with the 2011 Giant Roam 1 (https://www.giant-bicycles.com/en-us/...11/7244/43949/ ) so I guess it would be a 2011 model BB5???

I do this method: https://www.ecovelo.info/2011/04/15/a...5-disc-brakes/ which is similar to your method I think.

I still find it a real PITA!

Just to clarify - with the BB7 you can adjust the lateral position of each of the inner and outer pads easily, but to adjust alignment (angle) you would still need to unscrew the bolts to adjust it, but this should not be necesary if the wheel is always put back into the top of the dropouts.
