Help installing campagnolo record bottom bracket
Thank you in advance for your help. The bottom bracket in my oclv trek 5500 has side to side play and a trusted mechanic told me it needs to be replaced. I have not done a bottom bracket before and I was hoping to get some advice on the needed tools and procedure. I don't care if the replacement is another brand. I found these products which I am told will work for me (link below). I was hoping to get some advice on the parts I found (or if you know a better option), THE NEEDED TOOLS AND THE INSTALLATION PROCEDURE for this type of bottom bracket. Thank you so much.

What type of Campy crank do you have? Square taper? External bearing? If square taper, which model? Double or triple? More info is definitely needed.
Park tools web site has tutorials on removal and installation of all types of cranks, including past and present Campy types. Also, Campy bottom bracets are still available in several versions. Be aware that if you have a Campy square taper crank and bottom bracket they have an ISO taper, not the JIS that is used by Shimano and many other makers. Also, your bike uses an English threaded bottom bracket, which everyone makes.

That seems as good a bet as any for your Sq. taper crankset (made before they went to external bearings). Make sure you match the spindle length to what you have now (within a millimeter or two is fine). Also ask the seller which spline pattern (Shimano, Campy) installation/removal tool is needed and buy that at the same time if you don't have it.
I can't speak to the quality, but IMO no BB of this type lasts forever, so with what you're saving on this you'll be ahead of the game as long as it lasts a reasonable amount of time. BTW- if you plan on keeping this bike and crankset a long time you might consider buying 2 now, while they're still available.

Wouldnt surprise me that he has octalink cranks or something similar based on the bike he has.
If he had campagnolo in the bike he wouldnt be asking or tell us right away that he has campagnolo cranks whatever model. Shimano users never know details of any kind they just ask crap hehehe Besides, trek bikes never come with campagnolo. THe day that happen hell will freeze.
If this guy has octalink the BB in the picture wont work obviously, if he has a squared tapper shimano crankset the one in the picture might not work because is iso. Japanese shimaon stuff is jis, well you can put that and will work if you aren't anal with the possible problems but the main issue will be the lenght of the BB, probably the 102 will be too short.

If it's really a Campy Record square taper bottom bracket, the correct Campy bb is an asymetrical model specific to Record and Chorus. Here is a source for the Chorus model that works with either Chorus or Record double cranks:

The required bottom bracket remover/installation tool is a Park BBT-5 or equivalent and you will need a regular crank puller like the Park CCP-22

Assuming he has his facts right, then it's his decision whether to gamble that the analog will prove to be a good value.

Since the Trek 5500 was always one of Trek high end bikes, I will assume that regardless of which year the crank is a Dura Ace; unless the components were switched out or it's a European model..

I uploaded some pictures of the crank and bb to the original post. Hopefully someone will be familiar with it and be able to give me some advice on the needed tools and installation method

Read posts 3, 5 and 6 which were based on your correct assertion that you had a Campy Record crank. You can but the BB you linked to or you can buy a NOS Record, or Chorus 102mm BB. As for the tool you need it's the same as you may already have as a Cassette lockring tool.

Campagnolo bottom brackets are removed and installed using the same tool that is used for cassette lockrings. If you buy a different brand of bottom bracket, you will need a different tool. The bearings can be replaced in your current bottom bracket, you can buy replacements in a bearing supply distributor

Is this right? I have a Campy Chorus 10-speed triple crank on one bike with the matching 111 mm square taper Chorus bottom bracket. I have 21,000 miles on it and the bb is still rock solid. However, nothing lasts forever and some day it will need to be replaced or rebuilt. New replacements are getting hard to find and a few years from now will be even harder so knowing I can replace just the bearings with over-the-counter cartridges would be nice to know.

Yes, the bearings can be replaced, but is isn't easy. Most folks opt for a new cartridge. The center cartridge used to be available separately, but nowadays, you're lucky just to find a NOS BB at a reasonable price. I'm running my Chorus cranks on an old Suntour cup/cone BB.

So far I've been able to find several sources for the Chorus double bb but not the triple. I guess if it fails in the near future, I could get an ISO Phil Wood bb for about the same price. If it lasts another 25,000 or so miles the chainrings will probably also be ready for replacement and an entire new crank will be in order.
If 50,000 miles on a bb sounds unlikely, I've got a BB-6503 Ultegra Octalink triple bb with 37,000 miles and it's still in excellent condition and Octalinks had a reputation for lack of durability. A Campy should last at least that long.
