About 10sp shifter on 9sp drivetrain

So recently I put 10sp shifters (Microshift) on my 9sp drivetrain using alternate cable routing (Sheldon Brown) and much to my surprise, it works flawlessly. Does anyone know if that's by designed or mere coincident?
