I just got a wheelset with Open Sport hoops. I don't much like the wear indicator channels in the rim sides. I expect the wear indicators to be like those on my two-year-old Alex rims -- a dark area that extends a some distance into the rim. I certainly didn't expect to have circular ditches in the brake surface.

Has anyone had luck filling these channels with any softer-than-aluminum substance? I'd like to do that both for aesthetics and for more even brake pad wear.

first time you stop, that channel will fill up with brake rubber, and be a 'dark area that extends some distance into the rim'.

Get over it and just ride the bike.

You could attempt to fill them in with aluminum (brazing I'd assume) or just epoxy. Regardless of what you do, you will not have a permanent solution, be happy with the look, weight gain , time involved, money or compromising the rim's integrity. If you don't want the wear indicators, get a pair of CXP 33's. Dont, waste your time or money

That's a bit of a harsh statement but has a lot of merit. There is no way to safely and effectively fill in those groves. As clydeosaur recommended, CXP-33 rims don't have the wear grooves so fitting them would be an effective, if expensive, solution.

Yeah, huge waste of effort. If seeing the groove makes your OCD flare up, spend the money on a visit to your psychiatrist, not worthless parts replacements or modifications.

The wear channels will have no negative impact on brake pad wear.
