Compatiblity question

Hello,
I own for now a set of M416 mechanical disc brakes, and they're running with these rotors: SM RT54 S specifically..
I wanted to ask if a set of Avid BB7 would run without any problems with these rotors..
Thanks

Yup, rotars are rotars, and not brand specific.

Actually there are differences, primarily the width of the disc surface that comes in contact with the pads. If a brake has wider pads, it will have a wider contact surface on the disc. As far as the Shimano vs Avid, at least with the Deore pads, the avid tend to be wider, so it's probable the contact surface with the Deore will be too narrow, which would chew up the pads.

The SM-RT54 rotor is made for use with resin pads only, a new BB7 comes with metallic sintered pads.

To use the BB7 with that rotor you'd need to get resin/organic pads.

The braking track on some rotors is made to match the size of the pads of certain brakes.

Photo: BB7 & Code Pads (the BB7 is on top, the Code is on the bottom)
With the BB7 pads the measurement from the outer edge of the pad material to the inner edge of the pad material is larger then that of the Code pads.
If the BB7 was used with a rotor that was specifically made for the Code, the BB7 pads would overhang the inner edge of the braking track and a section of the pads would only rub on the rotor arms. Some people reported that there's a pulsating feeling when the pads rub on the rotor arms.

BB7 pads are about 15mm wide so they need a rotor that has a braking track which is at least 15mm wide for them to perform at their best.

Then should i pick an Avid rotor specifically? Or just another Shimano centerlock rotor would be suitable?
If i had to pick an Avid rotor, then i had to get a centerlock adaptor...
