shimano 8 speed cassette on 10 speed hub

Trying out a new frame and only have 8 speed group, but 8 and 10 speed wheels. Would like to try the new frame on the 10 speed wheels. Can I simply swap cassettes or do I need a spacer? Or will it not work?

Thanks

Shimano 8, 9 and 10-speed cassettes all use the same freehub bodies, so provided you have all the bits, you should be OK.

As stated it should work, but you don't need to depend on luck, guessing or asking if a spacer is needed. The cassette will tell you if you'll listen.

A cassette (any cassette) has to overhang the front of the freehub body (any freehub body) by 1-2mm so that the lockring can compress the cassette without bottoming against the freehub body. It's analogous to why the steerer has to end short of the spacer stack on threadless headsets.

So, mount the cassette and if it doesn't overhang slightly, add a spacer to the back. BTW- you always put the spacers in back so you have maximum clearance for the RD in low gear.

Don't forget, that things don't always line up identically, so double check your high and low gear limit settings every time you change cassettes, or even wheels.

logroll, Early 10S hubs will require cassette trimming, if I'm not mistaken. Later freehubs were interchangeable between 8, 9 and 10S.

Brad
I"m curious what you mean? I am guessing that you are referring to the shorter freehub body designed for 7speed cassettes on the early 105 hubs? Or is there something else that I'm not aware of.

I had a 105 hub just last week that had a 7 speed freehub body on it, I swapped it out with an 8-9-10 speed freehub and spaced it out to 130mm with proper dish.

Yeah, I had a wheel with one of those oddball hubs. I rebuilt the wheel with a different freehub. The 10s freehub was a Formula hub so I couldn't just swap out the hub body like I could with a Shimano body.

That's what bradtx was referring to; 10S not 105

That's the 7850 rear hub, great hub, as long as you know the limitations of what cassettes you can use

Bah, that was the hub where Shimano lost their way and copied everyone else's design instead of sticking with their own.

The 7850, along with most other 'freehubs' doesn't truly integrate the freewheel mechanism and consequently has the DS axle bearing near the centre of the axle. Given the NDS and DS bearings are the same size, it's clearly not an optimal arrangement.

Shimano's usual way pretty much means a steel cassette body, but IMO that's not much of a drawback when it's part of a fundamentally superior layout.

Just wanted to report back that the 8 speed HG shimano cassette fit perfectly on 10 speed sram hub. No spacers required. Really no rear derailleur adjustments necessary either. It was a breeze.

Now I am going to try putting 10 speed sram cassette on 8 speed hub, and see if that works.

Not always. The 7700 Dura Ace and post-7850 Dura Ace hubs use a titanium freehub body which also works well and isn't prone to the notching that an Al short-spline body would be.
