Bar end shifter. FD seems to shift like a feathering vs click

Hey just looking to see if I ended up installing my bar end shifters properly. My RD is clicking and shifting like a champ but I am a bit worried about the FD lever. When I shift from small to big ring (double) it feels more like a feathering vs getting that click sound. I mean it is working and is moving the chain no problem at all and when I click it down to the small ring I do get a small click. It's just strange to me but then again I never used bar end shifters till today.

I made sure to mount the shifter and even turn move it 90° to make sure the shifter was lined up to the lowest shift point for the small ring

Is the front shifter friction only? I got the impression that's how most of the bar ends were.

Some Shimano front bar ends have one click, I usually set it so that is the center ring. If
a double the small chain ring. Otherwise you just play it by feel.

Are you sure about that? What model? I've never seen or heard of any barend FRONT shifter that "clicked" or indexed, they are all friction shifters. Some have a fine tooth ratchet that helps equalize the effort in both lever directions but that is not indexing.

Then it sounds to me that they are working as intended! It feels smooth so I would say its friction shifting its a new set of Dura Ace SL!

Most (all?) Shimano front bar-end shifters are friction. There is no clicking.

If it is a double, there is no need for indexing either way. Shifting a double only has two standard positions so it is "indexed" regardless. Except for possible trimming.

sounds like you're feeling the exact reason why I use suntour power ratcheting bar ends shifters; instead of the shimano ones.

p.s. the suntour patents are dead by now; why doesnt shimano copy the superiour ratchet design????

The fact that the FD does not click into a fixed spot, is an advance, in my experience.

I really like how it doesn't click. It let's me tune the FD while on the big ring and no chain rub. No of course I also need to finish the last few limit adjust ments on the FD since I just set up the bike but I could see this to be very useful while riding!

I have 8S Ultegra bar ends on my touring bike that do this. It has nothing to do with indexing a gear as the feel is very slight, but it happens on a downshift from the big to middle chainring. I was told to rotate the adapter 90 degrees, which I dutifully did, but the 'bump' in the lever is the same. It wouldn't be felt shifting a double.

O, Your bike is working properly.

I don't know what model shifters they are I have 4 bikes with bar ends. I know I have Shimano light action, 105 and 1 with Sun Tours. It is not as much a click as a definite midpoint in the shifters rotation, very
noticeable. Maybe it's just a wear point, One set was converted from down tube shifters, they are 105's.
