Looking for uncut cable, either brake or derailleur

Hello! I'm looking for cable for puppetry, and bicycle derailleur or brake cable would be perfect for what I'm doing. But I can only find cut cable anywhere, and I need 20 foot sections for what I'm doing. I don't need housing, because I have pneumatic tubing that will probably work, which I was given for free (I can buy housing if this doesn't work).

I was hoping someone on this forum might know where to buy uncut cable?

Thanks a lot,

Chuck

Have you tried places like your hardware store or even Home Depot/Lowes?

I am pretty sure that they sell the cable in rolls and you can get it cut to length.

I just checked the McMaster Carr site. I didn't make a comprehensive search because I didn't quite know what to look for.

I googled for wire fishing leader. I found some .011 dia wire leader at bass pro, 20lb test, 200 ft for 5$. Another site had 30' spools, .008, 10 lbs, under $3 at farm and fleet. As near as I can tell, these are stranded.

edit: I found some leader at .041 d. Getting closer. I'm sure you can do your own search. Some leaders are plastic coated which would help with the abrasion issue.

FYI, I just measured some brake wires and they were around 0.060" (~1.5mm) in diameter. That's considerably larger than the choices you mention above. If you are going to be running them in housings the smaller ones may be more likely to cut into the housings. Of course you are the best judge of what suits your requirements.

YOu will have a hard time finding bike cables 20' due to the ends required on them. Look under wire rope or galvanized cable. Unless you require stainless which is more $$

Hit up hardware stores and ask for "aircraft cable", if they have the cable they should have all of the lugs and eyes you'll need to make up the cable ends.
