Sturmey Archer 3-speed slips out of gear in 2nd

Sturmey Archer 3-speed slips out of 2nd gear. Goes from engaged to free spinning while pedaling without cable movement. Seems to work alright in 1st and 3rd. It's 1979 and has not been ridden in years (maybe a decade).

Slipping out of second gear is often a sign of the shift cable being too loose. Check the cable for free movement then check the adjustment with the procedure shown here: https://sheldonbrown.com/sturmey-arch...tml#adjustment

+1 - That's what we kids in the 70s and 80s used to call 'slip gear' on our Raleigh Grifters and Choppers - it just needs the gear chain setting up properly which the link dsbrantjr posted tells you how to do.

That's gotta be a record - OP to Solution in less than 5 posts! Gotta love those old SA hubs.

My money is on the cable adjustment. Pawl springs is a possibility, but cable tension is far more likely.
