crank and chain ring install

Project bike coming along. Thanks for the brake advice, Rev. Now I am installing the chain ring and the cranks (Ultegra). I had the guy that I bought the frame from install a new BB, so that's already done. It looks like all I need is a large hex wrench to tighten. Is this correct? If so, any torque specs? What size hex wrench?

Thanks again.

You need to remove the self extractors and bolts so you can line up the splines on the spindle with the grooves in the crank arm. Start crank on spindle by tapping wih plastic mallet or good shove by hand.Grease spindle....8mm hex.

Newer Shimano cranks don't require a separate tool to remove the crankarms like they used to a few years ago. The hex bolt that tightens the cranks down has a smaller threaded piece that screws into the crank over the bolt so that when you loosen the bolt it pushes the crank out. Syd's right, you need to remove the self extracting part with a spanner so you can get the crank bolt out to get the crankarm on the splines.

Don't mean to be thick on this BUT...

I see how the cranks fit onto the bottom bracker. There is a threaded bolt which slips inside a threaded ...thing... on the bottom bracket (is this the self extractor?).

Now, I attched the cranks to the BB. They tightened. the cranks spin somoothly with no wobble. And I didn't use a spanner for anything. What have I done wrong?

If you got the cranks on the BB and everything seems fine, then you are probably okay. Remember however, it is very unlikely that you can get the bolts tightened to specs using a typical hex wrench. (I think the Park Tool website has the specs). You may need to purchase a torque wrench or take it to your LBS for final tightening.

Nothing, assuming you had the grooves and splines lined up correctly when you torqued it up and didn't hose the interface. I told you how to do it right,. Remove the self extrators and bolts(on the crank) so you can properly line things up,rather than flying blind. I've seen alot of octalink cranks buggered by not doing it right.

Well, probably does not fly! It's entirely possible to have the splines misaligned and then torquing things up hoses the interface, even tho the arm appears to have seated properly. Depending on how bad the buggering is the crank arm may or may not survive prolonged use. I've seen this buggery a number of times. It's just so easy to remove the self extractors and bolts , line things up properly and do it right!

Got it. Understand now. Took the self extractors off and lined up the splines. Just took me a couple of posts to figure out how the self extr. worked (and what the heck they were).

Appreciate the help.
