Campy NR Head Set Adjustment

Hi everyone

Getting a lot of help on my Head Set Post here, from onespeed, RJohn, and others.

So, I thought I would ask questions concerning problems I'm having adjusting the head set.

1) I have a new problem, and excuse me for bringing it up now. As we know, I do need the spacer for the Campagnolo NR <C> type head set. While I was installing the head set yesterday, went ahead and added my grease to the bearings and cups, made sure they were facing in the correct position. Mounted the head set, and began to tighten the heads to the frame tubing. When I get to a firm tight set, the fork does not swing freely. So, I begin backing off till the fork swings freely without any rubbing, but the thing is, is that I need to back of too much and the crown nut that covers the bearings remains a little loose.

Problem 2

2)The Stem: I was fortunate enough to get a hold of the standard Gran_Prix Stem. My question is that, there are stems with and without screws at the bottom of the stem. Do they booth work on the same principle when you tighten the Hex Bolt, that the bottom expands, or is it that the one with the screw, screws into the inside of a fork that has a port where the screw, screws into it. Guess what I am asking is the difference between a threaded stem and a thread-less stem. Help appreciated with this... Thanks in advance.

No, not the same function at all. Google threadless vs threaded headset - much better than trying to lay it all out in text here.

Have the head tube and fork crown been properly milled and faced?

You can't use a threadless stem with a threaded headset and vice-versa. Your Campagnolo headset is threaded, so you will need to use a quill type stem or theadless adapter with that headset.

Thanks for the info JohnD. To answer the question concerning milling and facing... No, they have not, and guess I'm going to need someone that knows what they are doing, so I'll ask Mike in Mt. Vernon if he has the tools to perform the milling and facing on the head tube and fork crown.

As for the threaded and thread-less, I have ordered the Thread-less adapter from my local bike shop. Thanks again...

The usual suspect here is either 1 the crown race is, missing, upside down, wrong for the headset or 2 you have one or both the bearings in upside down. I now you said the bearings were installed with the correct orientation, but double check none the less. From wikipedia

The back of the cage with the solid ring always goes toward the cone or raised area in the center of the cup.
